When I initially stated the book Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell I thought nothing of it. I thought that it was just another book that we had to read for English class. But because of this assignment I think that there is more to this book then I had originally thought. This book actually is relevant to my everyday life. I realize that Outliers is a book about everyday occurrences. This is why the book Outliers connects to my life. This book connects to my life in multiple ways. I never thought that the way I was raised by my parents would affect the way I act in society. Could my stress induced headaches really be from school? Finally someone who thinks it's actually smart to read in the summer and that accepts the fact that I work from the time I get home until the time I go to bed on homework.
The book Outliers showed to me that the way I am raised can affect how I act in society. Throughout my whole life my parents have told me to ask questions if I want answers. I was always raised to never be shy and I was taught the philosophy being shy gets you nowhere. I use this act daily. During school I ask questions in every one of my classes every day. An example is last week during Biology my class started a new topic. The new topic was on genetics and the structure of DNA. I must have asked at least fifteen questions that day during class. When I graduated kindergarten my teachers put on my graduation certificate that I was the one with a million questions. I love to ask questions because it adds to my intelligence. But other times I hate asking questions because I feel like they annoy my teacher. Outliers told me that I am so quick to ask a question because that is how I was raised. This method which parents teach their children is called concerted cultivation. (104) "Lareau calls the middle-class parenting style 'concerted cultivation.' It's an attempt to actively "foster and assess a child's talents, opinions and skills." My parents are raising me so that I can get the most that I could out of school. So this is normal for me and it should be for everyone. Right? Wrong. Gladwell shares another type of parenting in the book. (104) "Poor Parents tend to follow, by contrast, a strategy of 'accomplishment of natural growth." I have seen this type of parenting through my dad. When my dad was a young boy his parents (My grandparents) didn't have a lot of money. My grandmother taught and raised my dad through discipline and order. But my dad never listened. My dad also never did good in school. All of these factors added together, and I think that I get an example of the "poor (as in money)" way of parenting. My dad never did well in school because his parents never taught him to express his opinions. So when he went to school why would he think that a teacher would care about what he had to say? But what way is the correct way to raise a child? Because I have been raised my whole life to ask questions I think that asking questions is the right thing to do. But in school, why do kids who are obviously not poor sit in the back and never share their opinions or ask any questions? Is asking questions really the right way to learn? Even though Gladwell neglects to share his opinion on which parenting style in his opinion is better, I think that again asking questions is the best way to gain intelligence. Concerted Cultivation is the only way to not become subordinate to other students and to society. Anyway, what is so bad about asking so many questions?
I step in to the familiar sanitized smelling office and I check in for my appointment. After thirty minutes of waiting I get sent to my room for my check up. After another thirty minutes the underpaid doctor steps into the room. Sticking a nasal microscope up my nasal passageway he looks to see if my sinuses are clear or if again I need to go under the knife to remove the unwanted visitors that stay in my nose. I am at a checkup with my ENT. These check ups happens twice a year. The ENT is short for ears, nose and throat doctor. My ENT has to check to see if my allergies are acting up. When I was in seventh grade, they found a mass in my sinuses which was caused by overactive allergies. So I had to go and get it surgically removed. I had known something was wrong because I was getting and have gotten severe headaches my whole life. The ENT determined my headaches were due to allergies such as tree pollen, moss, dust, dog hair exc. But was this really the only thing causing these headaches? (253) "...Tremendously concerned that children not get too much schooling. In 1871 for example, the US commissioner of education published a report by Edward Jarvis on the 'Relation of Education to Insanity.' Jarvis had studied 1,741 cases of insanity and concluded that 'over-study' was responsible for 205 of them." So was Alec James Lee going crazy? No but, I was "over-studying". The ENT had also concluded that I was over stressed. This stress was the other reason I was getting headaches. In school I always stressed out about things like studying and finishing homework. Even right now while writing this essay I have a headache. So reading Outliers made me understand that I need to focus on my studies and that I should do good in school. But I should do it in moderation because really, who wants to go crazy because of school?
A kid who doesn't have time to eat dinner because of school work. Who has heard of that one before? I have because I do this practically every weekday. Here is an example of an extremely busy day... a typical Thursday. I get up at 5:00 every morning, catch the bus at 6:40, go to school (not that bad!). Straight from school I go to my bowling match which if it is home ends at 5:30 and if it is away I usually get home around 6:00- 6:30. When I get home I eat (If I have time), change out of my bowling outfit then I'm right out of the door again. From 6:30 to 8:00 I have Chamber choir practice (Chamber choir is the top singing group at GHS.) Then from 8:00 to whenever I do all of my homework. Sometimes I am done with it at 10:00 (I prefer to go to bed at this time) and other times I am up until 11:00. I have a cram packed schedule so like the students at the KIPP middle schools, I have had to cut out leisure time and activities. (266) "... (At a friend's house) So I would be at her house and I would be doing my homework...And she was so discouraged because we stayed until five and we had a lot of homework, and I told her that us having a lot of homework helps us do better in class. And she told me she didn't want to hear the whole speech. All my friends are know from KIPP." I can relate to this girl named Marita. I mean I have friends that aren't from GHS and I don't do my homework at their house. Instead though I have given up my time. I don't have time anymore to relax and watch TV with my family. I'm too busy to watch TV by myself even. I used to love to watch all of my shows like American idol, national geographic, man vs. wild and more, but like Marita I have given up my personal time in order to become a successful person. (266) "...To become a success at what they did, they had to shed some part of their own identity." My identity was family and the wildlife channel but now it is an overachiever who doesn't stop until the work is done.
Stress, concerted cultivation and a packed schedule. All part of my life as Alec lee and a part of the lives of the people in the book Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell. This book is not like others. Although I have said to other people that this book is horrible, it is all a lie. I love this book. Outliers made me feel like I was not so strange. That I'm not the only one that thinks too much school can become overwhelming. I'm not the only one courageous enough to ask twenty questions in one eighty minute class. It allowed me to realize that I'm not the only person who gives up part of their identity for the reward of intelligence and success. And who knows...Maybe I'm not overachieving but everyone else is underachieving.

Shoe Poetry Prompt

A New Silver World
I walk down the abandoned street,
The only one in this new world to not have a hovercraft.
As I push open the heavy platinum door, I see the silver girls.
Their skin stained the only color left in the world.
I forget that I planned the models to come early for the runway.
It's a new beginning for me, in a way it is a risk.
A new color for the world to see.
The history books called it...red.
Defying government laws, I dress the girls in their red lace.
The blaring techno music starts, I send the first girl out...
Nothing, not a sound wave in the air.
My show ends and I walk out to accept my applause.
When I walk out, I take shape of my color, defying, free, out of the ordinary.
I see every camera snap at once, everyone wanting a piece of my red shoe.
As I walk home I think to myself: Blue tomorrow?

Microfiction: Everyone in the classroom turned and stared.
Everyone in the classroom turned and
stared. Of course, what should I have expected? They all thought that I was
dead anyway. It was 2359. The world changed after the disease-orfog- started to
spread around the world. Scientists had created a vitamin which could supposedly
cure anything. But all it did was start a catastrophe. The leaders of our world
took the top specialists in everything with them to a safety bunker. I was one
out of three doctors chosen to go with them. When we emerged from our bunker,
no one had expected to see what they saw. All was gone. Few trees were in
sight.
This had been five years ago and now our
new village is stable. We go to class everyday to learn from the other
specialists. But recently people have noticed people have gone missing. I overheard the leader of Romania anxiously
telling the leader of Serbia that there was only on doctor left… me. As I walk
to my biology class in the school of medicine, an odd person pulled me aside.
We walked down a long silver hallway going deeper into the school than I have
ever gone before. When we reach the door I notice it was made of glass, which is
funny because we’ve been running low on it. When we entered there was a
circular table with the elite leaders of the world. They told me to sit and
listen with urgency. They started to tell me that I was chosen. I was doing phenomenal
in school. My job they say was to go out of town to look for resources that
will help make our life simple and ordinary again. They chose me because I had
excelled in hunting, gathering and electricity. I knew this is was no easy
task. Everyone who had gone before me never returned. This I now realize is why
all of my fellow doctors are gone.
Before I know it I return to the gates
which only a month ago I had left. I found the one thing that we needed the
most…electricity. I had entered a department store and saw a rack of light
bulbs and batteries. That’s why I was back so quickly. I ran passed everyone in
the village, I see them stare with amazement at me because I am the only one
ever to return. I run down that long hallway which I so long ago had entered. I
had so much information to tell the leaders- I saw the dead bodies of the
others sent out to do the quest, I had electricity, and I counted 534 new
trees. But just as I entered the classroom I heard the leaders whispering “…
Good, another one to cross of the list. We need to have the intelligent ones go
out so they can die and so that they don’t find out we were the ones that
started orfog.” The door shut and everyone in the classroom turned and stared.

My T-Shirt Vote
So I didn't know if you wanted me to post the picture up here, but blackboard said put a description of the shirt that you want to vote for. I wanted to post the picture but it would not copy, so I decided to just put a description like you had originally said on blackboard. I vote for the shirt that says " The world today doesn't make sense, so why should I paint pictures that do? It also had a drawn picture on the shirt!

I think that the writer of this piece has a good point of view. The writer states that obesity is a problem and his opinion it seemed was to put a tax on sugared goods such as soda. "...idea of a tax on soda and other sugar-sweetened drinks." But the author also shows the reality side. This is that the law on a tax on sugared goods will never go through. So now the solution is to get fresh produce into small supermarkets to try to replace the fattening goods. The author has very good facts showing that action need to be taken to supply small grocery stores with fresh produce. "...Since last March, Capital District Community Gardens has been supplying nine convenience stores and markets with fresh produce under a five-year, $175,000-a-year grant from the state Health Department that also helps underwrite fitness programs. Veggie Mobile Sprout, as this program is called, delivers produce twice a week at wholesale prices, enabling urban stores in Albany and Schenectady to sell fresh food at supermarket rates and offer something better than their typical fare of often fattening and less nutritious processed food. The program’s goal is to become self-sustaining." But this article also has flaws. In the beginning the author says that many people in Albany and Schenectady are living in food deserts. He says that this is a place where a grocery store is less than a mile away and that most of these people are poor. " More than 40,000 people in Albany and Schenectady live in what are known as food deserts — places where a grocery store is at least a mile away. Many are poor. The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates that about 3,700 of the more than 23,000 people in Albany who don’t live near a large grocer are poor." He says later in that paragraph that for a poor person, a trip to the supermarket is a trek. But I think all of this is confusing and irrelevant. Wouldn't it be good to live a mile away from a grocery store. Also why would it matter that out of these 40,000 people that they were poor. The big dysfunction is how does all of the above information connect to putting a tax on sugared drinks and sodas? There is another flaw that I found. I think that he has a good case pertaining to child obesity and wanting to put fresh food in local markets. The thing is that wouldn't kids and their parents who are overweight just buy the same food that they usually buy at the grocery store. " Here’s one direction: Since last March, Capital District Community Gardens has been supplying nine convenience stores and markets with fresh produce under a five-year, $175,000-a-year grant from the state Health Department that also helps underwrite fitness programs. Veggie Mobile Sprout (the organization)..." I think they (The "obese" consumers) would just past by the new foods and not think anything of it. So I think that this author neglected to include a solution that goes side by side with the fresh produce. I think that you need to educate the consumers on why you should buy the new food. You should show them the advantages of buying a fresh orange rather than a bag of lays chips. This editorial was very good, I just think that the author should have explained and added much more detailed explanations. Sorry, I didn't want to do this black and white thing, but my computer was being crazy so I had to. Sorry- Alec

H=Hokkaido
Hokkaido
Breed description- This dog is known for its strength. They are does that are used for guarding and hunting. "...is known for its strength and was a draft dog initially, but today is used for hunting and guarding. The Ainu is extremely courageous for his size" this dog is sharp and fearless, they arn't afraid to warn off danger. If they had to, they would ward off a 650 pound bear.
Apperance/ size- This dog is a medium size dog. It has small, triangular size eyes. They often have black spots on their tounge. "Also of interest is that, although not particularly desired, these dogs occasionally have a black tongue. This may hint at ties to the chow chow and mainland China." This dog has small ears that stick up. The dogs coat can be red, white, black, tiger, sesame or wolf-grey.
Diet- The hokkaido is an active dog, so it needs a good amount of food. The dogs ashould not eat any foods such as grapes, becasue it can get stuck in their throats. The dog should have a dog food that is high in nutrition but it shouldn't have any maufactured ingredients in it such as man-made meats. A good food to feed this dog based on the sapects I stated above would be Purina!
Temperament - This dog has a history for their faithfullness to their owners. They will protect you. Like I sadi earlier, the dog will fight a bear. A time could be to protect its owner. " This breed has the unusual capability of fighting against the Hokkaido brown bear or Higuma to protect its master." This breed of dogs combines hunter with pet. This dog should not run around with other dogs and they are safe with children as long as they have been raised with them sience puppyhood.
Shedding - This dog has a harsh and straight double coat which needs to be groomed and brushed alot. Daily brushing is recommended. "The harsh, straight, double coat of the Ainu Dog should be brushed and combed on a regular basis."
Health/Allergies/Vaccines - This dog has no imediate health problems or concerns. They are just recommended to get normal vaccines. Such as lyme disease and the meisles.

Small Poetry Promp
Caterpillar
Inching along a rough terrain,
A monster inside of them: Hunger.
A minuscule thing yearning to grow big
Eventually changing it's state,
Into a something that is a feather in weight.
Rapidly flapping its newly formed wings,
Its goal to lay its babies on a leaf.
Starting just as her,
A miniscule monster,
Eating, yearning, hoping to grow big.

TU Tuesday Guest Speaker
1. Poise- I would give our speaker a 5/5 rating on poise. She talked a lot about every question that she answered and she always made eye contact to the person who asked the question. She did this when I asked one of my question's which was. " Was times union the first place that you applied for, because it's such a big newspaper. She seemed experienced when talking to the group and she felt comfortable. She said that she has done this many times before at collages.
2. Clarity- I would give our speaker a 4/5. I would give her this, because when she talked, it was very clear, bright, energetic and interesting but sometimes she talked too fast. Like when she talked about the "Dairy Queen" article. I thought that she explained it clearly and she covered everything but when she talked it was a tad fast so I would be focusing on something that she had said previously and she would already be on the next part of her story. During the Dairy queen story i didn't understand her reasoning for getting up at three in the morning to go with the farmers.
3. Volume- I think that her volume was perfect. She wasn't shouting at all but she wasn't mumbling at the same time. She talked at a perfect volume when she was talking about her who is Caroline? blog. There is no real example except for that she did it throughout the class period.
4. Information- I would give her a 5/5. Whenever she answered a question is was always with a lot of detail which is always good but also she never put unnecessary detail into her answer. For example when she was talking about her thanksgiving food blog post. She talked about the food she ate on thanksgiving she even said how she liked the food to be spicy and that thanksgiving food is heavy and bland. I thought this detail and information was perfect. It's not like she put in what she eats on the rest of the holidays because that would have been completely off topic and irrelevant.
5. Organization- I think again her organization was perfect. Whenever there was a story behind an answer, she always told the story in chronological order. When she told the who is Caroline story, she started with how in the first few weeks she called the head orders. Then she called billy's parents, then that resulted in the times union almost being sued. Her stories were always start to end never start to middle then oh wait i forgot to tell you something, middle again then end.
My Role- I think that I participated good and with effort. I asked about four or five questions and so did other students like Marcus and Jack. I did feel like some people were bored and just wanted to get it over with. But like I said before, some people were engaged and were asking questions frequently.
I would recommend you bringing her back next year, but i think that you should have the students do something else besides read her article, maybe find ten of her blog posts that you like, because it was hard to think of what to talk about at sometimes. Yes, I think that you could invite someone else but if you did, I hope that it would be someone nice like our last guest, we don't want someone who is boring and mean! I don't know anyone else that can visit, because I don't read the newspaper.

Article #1
http://www.timesunion.com/living/article/Playing-dairy-queen-for-a-day-2229727.php
Question#1- When did your obsesion with cows start? And why?
Question#2- Did you still like cows after this ordeal, beacuse you said that the cow peed on you and you got cow manure on you?
Comment#1- I liked how much detail there was in the peace. It made me feel like I was on the farm next to you. " Reaching between the hind legs of the cow, I feel for the teat. The large black and white animal lifts her back hoof. I jump, thinking about the multiple warnings that cows kick -- hard."
Comment#2- I liked how you wern't embarassed to say what happened while at the farm and how you expressed your emotions. " I feel the familiar, warm spray on my face. This time, I'm unfazed."
Article #2

Question#1- I don't understand the resistance part, where you resisting agenst the mean and brutal opinions of others?
Question#2- Why did you start this job if you knew so little about it?
Comment#1- I felt bad for you when you were first starting your blog and that women commented meanly about your blog. But what I think is, who are you to say that this blog is horrible and that everything she writes will be horrible. She dosn't do that job so stop criticizing. " Then some mean-spirited women came on to share with me and my 20 readers just how awful I was, and how anything I'd have to say would be boring.
Comment#2- I felt like this article gave a lesson that is helpfull to all, and it motivated me to take harassing comments and make them my motivation to keep going. "...because for some resistance is the greatest motivator."
Article#3

Question#1- Why would wearing wedding rings make Cameron go to the hospital?
Question#2-
Comment#1- I liked that you explained a "complecated medical term" so that people could understand what your saying. " You heard that right -- degloving. It's a medical term used to describe instances when a section of skin is torn away."
Comment#2- I don't agree with this article. I think that people just like to were their wedding rings and that people get to into the meaning with this ring. " Plus we know wedding rings don't prevent affairs. Studies regularly come out that women are more attracted to men with rings, because it's a sign that that man was good enough to be "chosen" by someone. Of course rings don't prevent affairs

Blog opinion prompt #2
I do not believe in this statement at all. I think that kids should have the same amount of respect as adults when it comes to responsibility for abuse testimonies. It's like saying a child knows nothing at all, and that they aren't capable of doing something like testifying against someone in a case. I think that adults try to control kids too much. Kids can take care of themselves sometimes and adults don't realize that. Some adults act like kids are on a lower level then them. Maybe they aren't out of school yet but kids are usually equally intelligent as their parents. I know I am smarter then my parents, and if I couldn't testify against someone in an abuse case, then I would take it as a offense to my intellectual ability! Kids should be able to testify in an abuse case!

I Want to Write About #96
Through out my life, I have learned many important life lessons. One of the most important one that i have learned is to not take things for granted and never wish away time. Life is short. My aunt Frances was a person whom I looked up to alot. She was succesful, loved life and she lived everyday as if it was her last. She alwasy rented a house at Lake George and my grandma would take me and my cousin John up there for about five days. The last two years in which she rented the camp, I realized how much I loved it up their in the house which practically sat on the water. I realized then and there that I should stop getting in fights with John and stop wishing away my time up there, because I got to spend alone time with my grandma and aunt whom I loved dearly. When she passed away, my summer never felt complete. I always wish that I could turn back time and bring back those memories in which I found joy and happiness. So it's irony, because whilw I was wishing away my time up there, a year later I was saying how I would do anything to get atleast one more day up at that big, white, old house which sits on a hill up on Lake George. To spend time with two people whom fill up my heart.

G=Galapagos islands
7 Sights and Attractions
1. Go see one island in the Galapagos called Espanola. Espanola is the oldest island in the Galapagos chain, when you go there, you can see much wildlife, which overtime have adapted to their natural needs."Secluded from the other islands, wildlife on Espanola adapted to the island's environment and natural resources." Just one example of an animal you can see is a iguana, during their breeding season, they change color!
2. When your in Espanola, look for the Hood Mockingbird. This bird is not afraid of people. "...frequently land on visitors heads and shoulders searching for food." The Hood Mockingbird is bigger than most of the birds on the island. One unique feature of this bird is that it is the only carnivorous bird in the island. It eats things like insects, baby turtles and sea lion placenctas.
3. Another place that you can go while in the Galapagos is the island of Fernandina. This island is the youngest of the Galapagos islands. This island has a extremly active volcano. "...since eruptions still may occur every few years. Which changes the landscape and life on the island." When you go to this island you can take a dangerous yet unique path which shows you lava feilds.
4. While in Fernandina, you can also take a path which shows you marine iguanas and a colony of sea lions. This island is the home to the largest colony of marine iguanas. "During the first half of the year the iguanas nest here by burrowing small holes in the sand." When you go to see the sea lions, you will surely hear them before you see them. This is becasue they are extremly territorial and what you are hearing are their warning barks.
5. Another island of the Galapagos that you can go and visit is the island of Genovesa. This island is relativly small. Which has a collapsed volcano in the middle of it. This island is an oasis for birds, which you would go to see. "Tower attracts an enormous number of pelagic seabirds that come there to nest. Great frigatebirds, red-footed boobies, swallow-tailed gulls and storm petrels all breed here by the thousands." Although these birds are an amazing sight to see, you better book you excursion quickly, because of conservation atempts.
6. When your in the island of Genovesa, go and visit the Prince Philips Steps. In order to get to these steps, you first start by taking a panga ride along the rocky cliff edges. These steps are named after Prince Philip who visited the island in the sixties. Once at the top of the steps, the terrain becomes flat and abundent with birds. "At the top of the steps the trail becomes relatively flat and bird life abounds." If you visit during the right time of the year, you could possibly see thousands of birds nesting.
7. While in the Galapagos, you can try visiting the largest island called Isabella. This island was made by the connection of six volcanos. The island is shaped like a seahorse. When your on this island, you can visit the six different volcanos which are frequently active. You can also see the abundence of tortoises and different vegetation. "Isabela's large size and notable topography created barriers for the slow moving tortoises; apparently the creatures were unable to cross lava flows and other obstacles, causing several different sub-species of tortoise to develop." Although this island is farly young; forming about one million years ago, it has very different vegitation. The new soil and lava feilds do not have much nutrients in them, so there are different fauna and flora from the other islands.

"A chain is no stronger than its weakest link"
This proverb means alot to me, it makes me think. I love to sing and thats why I am in chourus and all of the select choir groups in the school. I hate it when people who are in these groups don't like to sing. Then I ask myself, "Why are they doing this if they don't like to sing?" They are the weekest link in the chain. This relates to the choirs because the choir can only excel if its weekest link (The person who dosn't want to be there) trys and is doing what they are suppose to do, because if that person does something wrong it sticks out like a sour thumb. I also use this proverb with bowling, if some perosn on my team dosn't like bowling, they arn't going to try and they are going to bring my team down. A team or group is only as succesful as their weekest person! Why do it if you hate it?!

Use your five senses. Brainstorm a list of all the Halloween sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and feelings you can think of.
Sights-
- The kids with there bags sagging, full with candy.
- The creative costumes, no kid alike
- Houses which have been turned into haunted houses, with the ghosts hanging form their trees
- Both kids and adults sharing a common goal, to get the most candy humanly possible.
Sounds-
- Hearing kids both screaming and laughing all at once.
- Hearing the halloween music from the scariest houses.
- Hearing parents having to yell at their children to "STOP-TRICK OR-TREATING".
- Hearing kids planning a trick because they didn't get treated.
Smells-
- Smelling home baked candy apples.
- Smelling the smoke coming from all of the fog machines.
- Smelling the fire in which you sit next to after your done with trick-or-treating.
- Smelling the cool autumn air.
Tastes-
- Tasting all of the different kinds of deliceous candies.
- Tasting the pumpkin seeds, which have just been taken from the newly carved jack-o-lantern.
- Tasting the customary spaghetti dinner, in which my family has always had...EVERY Halloween night.
- Tasting the pumpkin pie, which we always have after the spaghetti dinner.
Feelings-
- The excitment of starting to collect candy.
- The scary feeling when you walk up to a house which have been decorated to the max!
- The eerie feeling while walking around your neighborhood that kids are behind you waiting to scare you.
- The anxiousness of waiting the whole month of October for Halloween to come!

TU TUESDAY!
Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative, connotative, and technical meanings; analyze the cumulative impact of specific word choices on meaning and tone.
Pull at least FIVE words or phrases out, define them, describe their effect, and tell what the overall impact those words or phrases give to the piece as a whole while incorporating into the post the textual evidence you pulled out from it to define.

- Quarantine: Strict isolation imposed to prevent the spread of disease.
- Effect: showing how serious the bettles can be. So that people would put trees in quarantine.
2. In the vicinity for potentialPull at least FIVE words or phrases out, define them, describe their effect, and tell what the overall impact those words or phrases give to the piece as a whole while incorporating into the post the textual evidence you pulled out from it to define.

1. Not instituting a quarantine on the movement
- Quarantine: Strict isolation imposed to prevent the spread of disease.
- Effect: showing how serious the bettles can be. So that people would put trees in quarantine.
- Vicinity: The area or region near or around a place.
- Effect: showing that this beetle problem is in the Albany area.
3. An invasive Chinese beetle
- Invasive: characterized by or involving invasion.
- Effect: Showing that this is a serious problem and the beetle can cause bad things. (Killing trees)
4. Signs of infestation by the beetle
- Infestation: The act of infesting: to live in or overrun to an unwanted degree or in a troublesome manner.
- Effect: showing that the beetle is starting to or can start to become a problem, when it comes to the trees, sort of like the effect invasion has.
5. transport of untreated firewood
- Untreated: To not deal with (A disease, patient, exc.) in order to relieve or cure.
- Effect: showing/ emphasizing how untreated firewood can be dagerous and what type of wood is effected with the beetle.
This article was about a Chinese beetle which eats/ kills ash trees. It explains that the beetle is starting to come into our area. The effect that these words have in the piece is that they are all showing how much of a threat the beetle is to the wood. They show where this is happening and the degree so far at which this is happening.
When the author put in words like infestation and invasive, "for potential signs of infestation by the beetle"they were showing that the beetle is a burrden in which no one wants and they are a problem. When the author put in the word vicinity, "Wildlife officials are checking trees in the vicinity" he was simply stating how officals are checking the general area for signs of the beetles. When the author put in the word untreated, "the state banned transport of untreated firewood to 50 miles or less" they were stating how much of a problem this beetle can be and how it poses a threat of spreading, which would not be good.

WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE!
I read this book all the time when I was a child. My mom was the one to read this to me. Being a child, I nerver realized how much this book actually symbolized. This book is basically a book on metaphors. When the little kid goes to the island of the Wild Things, it is actually all versions of him and his personality. I never realized this connection until I saw the WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE movie. This book which I read as a child shows me a lesson. It teaches me that any type of literature can have literary devices involved in it. Even though the reading age of the book may be unable to understand the real meaning of the book. At the same time it is a fun and enjoyable book in which I think that every little kid deserves to read.

Your Letter (F)= Your College (Frostburg)
http://www.frostburg.edu/
Yes! I would go to this college.
5 Reasons why I would go to this college:
1. It has political science as a major and music as a minor. ( For now, this is what I want to go for!)
2. Tuition is about seventeen thousand dollars.
3. They have otional instutional and departmental scholarships.
4. There is a " Bookstore," where you can find your needed textbooks.
5. They have a campus debit card, in which you put money in your account and you use it to buy things on the campus.
3 dislikes about Frostburg
1. I don't like the dorms, they don't look big.
2. I don't like the location, I don't like being in Maryland.
3. There is no bowling team.

Vintage Photo
First Flight
This picture is one of the first successful flights. This is what the picture is about, one because the title is First Flight. Secondly, I think that this picture is about one of the first succesful flights, because the picture is of an airplane and it is flying succesfully. Finally I see in the picture the type of airplane. You can tell that the airplane is old becasue of the way it is designed, it just looks old, the wings are even bent a little.
This picture is worth a thousand words to me. This is because of one main reason, my desire to fly. I don't want to fly as a pilot, I want to fly like a bird. Wings spread open, nothing holding you back. I obviously know that this isn't possible. No one can just grow wings then fly out over the sea. So I want to invent something that allows me to fly like that. This picture reminds me of the Wright brothers and their success in flying airplanes. When i think f the Wright brothers, I think of their insperation on my dream to one day fly!

My name is Asher Lev by Chaim Potok
" My name is Alec, the imaginative, about whom you have read in newspapers and magazines, about whom you talk so much at your dinner affairs and cocktail parties, the notorious and legendary."
And this is my story...
At the young age of five, I Alec the imaginative have always been fascinated by birds. I was jealous that they could fly. I wanted to fly over the mountains of Haphorn and see the midight black sky, feel the wind gushing through my hair. I new one day this imaginative, imposable dream would come true. Ten years later I invented a flying machine, which I like to call- verbinity. This was my greatest invention, although others like thyrup- the unbais judge and furry- the pet dragon, were great also. You, the people, talk about this magnificent invention everyday, when your on your snack break, around the water cooler. No! You better yet, you use it everyday. In this year 2138, no one uses a car anymore, they use the verbinity. There are stoplights, intersections even cross flying for people who decide to use my jetpack invention. Some may ask why we still have stoplights in the air. It's because I don't want my lovely invention to be the cause for major chaos in the sky. And to think, this all happened because my little five year old brain was obsessed with birds!
Thanks for reading Alec the imaginative's thoughts on his verbinity- the flying machnie!

Woolly Bear Winter- http://blog.timesunion.com/gardening/woolly-bear-winter/1311/
According to this article, a Wolly Bear catapiller can predict whether: we will have a mild or harsh winter based on the brown color on it's body. This winter should be a mild winter. "I’ve only seen a couple of Woolly Bears so far this fall but both have had far more brown than usual. This would indicate that we have a mild winter ahead." This statment is completely unconclusive/ false. I have heard another myth that if squirrel's tails are "puffier" then usual, then we are going to have a harsh winter. Both my mom and grandma have noticed that the squirrel's tails are "puffier then usual". So this proves that the Wolly Bear's prediction isn't one hundred percent true. Also, how does this blogger know what the normal amount of brown color in a Woolly Bear catapillar look like?

!TU Tuesday!- The Simpsons are in danger in 23rd year
Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text. And, develop FIVE factual, interpretive, and evaluative questions for further exploration of the topic(s).
http://www.timesunion.com/entertainment/article/The-Simpsons-is-in-danger-in-23rd-year-2202691.php
This simpsons article was about the financial crisis that the cast and crew are having. Without severe finacial, the show wont have anymore new seasons. They want big pay cuts for the actors and actresses." The show's producer said Tuesday the show can't continue under its current financial model, following a report that big pay cuts are being sought for the actors who provide voices for Homer, Marge and Bart Simpson and other characters."
The actors make eight million dollars a year. The financial solution is to cut thier pay to about half of what it is now. Even though reruns on t.v are current, it's not enough money. The actors say that they will agree to a financial argement but they have to get part of the profit made from merchendising. "The Daily Beast reported Tuesday that producers are demanding a 45 percent pay cut from the six voice actors, who reportedly make nearly $8 million each for a season. The website said the voice actors have offered to take a 30 percent pay in return for a portion of the show's syndication and merchandise revenue." It looks like there will never be a twenty fourth Simpsons season unless big budget cuts are made to both the crew and actors.
1. What are the producers doing with the money made from the merchendising?
2. Why does it cost so much to run/ create a show like this?
3. Are other shows in this type of financial crisis?
4. Why were the actors/ actresses being payed eight million per season to begin with?
5. How much money does the simpsons show create a year?

Raising the pay of cheif executive officers in bad economic times should be forbidden!
Yes I agree with this statment. I do not think that it is fair to raise their salary. Alot of state workers have their salary frozen because of the bad ecnomic times. So why should the higher authority make more and more money when we could be using it to get new supplies that are needed for school. I think that when some people get their salary frozen, everyone should. Just because you are lets say a grade 31 in the state and someone else is a 23, it dosn't mean one should have a personal economic advantage! Not cool!! Also, if you are a higher authority it's not like you need the money. It's just want and greed not need or desperation.

Write about a color without mentioning the actual color
Evergreen
The shade of a pine forest,
Where the immature seedlings hang,
Waiting for the first gust of fresh spring air.
It's the stem color of the tropical plant,
Angel's trumpet, who's sunshine gold flower,
Has no imperfections.
It's the crunchy lettuce that you chew into,
While you spoon into your split-pea soup,
On the day that you decide to recycle!

This painting caught my eye right away. This caught my eye for two reasons really. The first reason was because I love nature and this picture obviously has nautre in it. I like how it has components of a forest, mountain and a lake in it. It feels like it's open yet very peacful and i like it alot. The second reason is becasue of the house/ mansion that is distant in the backround. I love this because I love to learn about things like u.s history and ancient england. The castle in this reminds me alot about english castles and absolutism in the 1600th century!

You will soon meet the person you admire (130)
"You will soon meet the person you admire."
I admire Yotsuba. Yotsuba is a character from a graphic novel called Yotsuba. I admire her because she doesn’t think twice about what she does --She goes over to her neighbor’s house whenever she wants and just walks in. A person that I admire and I would love to meet is Suzanne Collins. She is my favorite author in the world. I think that Hunger Games is one of the best series that I have ever read in my life. Along with: The forest of hands and teeth, Divergent and Fablehaven. Suzanne Collins has a way with words that I wish I could have. I want to be able to write like she does. I’m jealous because my sister has an amazing writing talent, when she writes it’s amazing!

E
Every day I have homework. Even on the weekends, I still do homework that was assigned. Everyone in the world has different traits. Emotions are fun to guess when you see someone walking by. Eeyore from winnie the pooh just needs someone to hug him. Erudite are the intellegent people in my new book that i chose for homework. Ernist was my artistic grandfathers name. Ernist was great at painting, woodworking and everything in between. Ernist painted a picture of a bird out of a pen and i have it hung on my wall in my room! Even though I never got to meet him, i feal as if he and i are connected through his painting!

Believe
and preted it gets easier,
when your hero moves to another world, never to be seen again,
when your best isn't good enough.
and pretend it gets easier,
when your dream is shatered in two,
when you know the going will only get tougher.
and pretend it gets easier,
after hours of daunting homework,
after a failed grade.
and pretend it gets easier,
only to make your day feel better,
when the real thing to do is believe that it gets easier.
and pretend it gets easier,
after hours of daunting homework,
after a failed grade.
and pretend it gets easier,
only to make your day feel better,
when the real thing to do is believe that it gets easier.
